An Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the late 1980s, I set out on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an research lab at Columbia University – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I consider applying for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she declared: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for three years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the confidence or nerve to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. And, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
