The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
